ABSTRACT

This research work focuses on the Effect of computer usage on academic achievements of secondary school students, a case study of some selected secondary schools in Aleiro Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The objectives of this study is, to find out the relationship between computer usage and academic achievements of some selected secondary schools within Aleiro metropolis, to examine the effectiveness of Computer usage in teaching and learning process in some selected secondary schools in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State, and to identify the disadvantages of computer usage in some selected secondary school in Aliero Local Government. The instrument used in this research work was questionnaires because of its suitability in obtaining the required information for the research. The total sample size of this study is eight hundred and fifty (850) students. A total of one hundred (100) respondents students were selected across the five secondary schools using purposive sampling technique. The following were discussed based on the contribution of researchers, concept of computer, concept of computer usage, concept of academic achievement, computer integration in learning environment and the rationale for computer in schools. This research instrument has an option of ‘YES or NO’. The researcher use the data collected from the responses of respondents and analyze it in tabular form, using statistical presentation and interpretation of data, tables, percentage and frequency were used in answering research questions. The researcher concludes that there is significant relationship between computer usage and academic achievements, effectiveness of computer usage in teaching and learning is low and using computer has more advantages then disadvantages in schools. Therefore, the researcher recommends that government should among others things provide schools with full working computer system, computer laboratory, qualified teachers and standby generators to boost teaching and learning process.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

This chapter represents the background to the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions, Significance of the study and scope/Delimitations of the study.

1.2 Background to the Study

Information and communication technology (ICT) has become an important source of innovation and improvement of efficiency for many sectors across the globe. In Nigeria and in education sector per say, the application and use of computer has become major part of the learning process for students both outside and inside the classroom setting.

Student’s academic achievements refer to the extent to which a student has achieved their short or long-term educational goals. However, According to Anyanwu (2003), they have faced two main difficulties. On one hand, student performance is hard to observe and there is still confusion about its definition. On the other hand, computer is evolving technologies and their effects are difficult to isolate from their environment. There is no standard definition for student achievement. The standard approach focuses on achievement and curricula, how students understand the subjects and obtain their certificate or their marks. However, a more extensive definition deals with competencies, skills and attitudes learned through the education experience (Kamba, 2009).

Furthermore, Ogunsola (2005) stated that, the effect of computer usage on learning is currently in relation to the internet to facilitate teaching and learning. Computers are the technologies used in conveying, manipulation and storage of data by electronic means, they provide an array of powerful tools that may help in transforming the present isolated teacher-centered and text-bound classrooms into rich, student-focused, interactive knowledge environments. To meet these challenges, secondary schools must embrace the new technologies and appropriate computer use for learning. The relationship between the use of computer and student performance in secondary schools is not clear, and there are contradictory results in the literature. Earlier economic research has failed to provide a clear consensus concerning the effect on students’ achievement (Kamba, 2009).

Its believe that student performance is mainly explained by a student’s behavior’s, educational environment and teachers’ methods, the use of computers may have an impact on these determinants and consequently the outcome of education. The differences observed in the performances of students are thus more related to the differentiated impact of computer usage on the standard determinants.

The rationale of studying academic achievement in the context of computer usage adoption is to present significant relationship that exists between the two variables.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

Computer use by teachers and student is getting more and more common every year. Computers are used by teachers and students to undertake different tasks reasons. They are tools in today’s academic environment.

For many years, educational researchers have maintained an interest in the effective prediction of students’ academic achievement at school. The prediction and explanation of academic achievement and the examination of the factors relating to the academic achievement are topics of greatest importance in different educational levels. Studies have shown that prior academic achievement is an important predictor of performance at other levels of education. Similarly, cognitive ability was found as the strongest predictor of academic achievement. However, some studies confirm that the correlation between cognitive ability and academic achievement tends to decline as students’ progress in the educational system.

The relationship between computer usage and students’ academic achievement has been the emphasis of extensive literature during the last two decades. Some of them help students with their learning by improving the communication between them and the instructors (Valasidou and Bousiou, 2005). Leuven et al. (2004) stated that there is no evidence for a relationship between increased educational use of computer and students’ academic achievement. In fact, they find a consistently negative and marginally significant relationship between computer usage and some student achievement measures. In support to these, some students may use computer usage to increase their leisure time and have less time to study. Online gaming and increased communication channels do not necessarily mean increased achievement. Based on all these, the researcher is examining the effect of computer usage on academic achievement of secondary school students in Aliero LGA., Kebbi State.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The following are the objectives of this study:

To examine the relationship between computer usage and academic achievement of secondary school students in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

To examine the effectiveness of computer usage in teaching and learning process in secondary schools in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

To identify the disadvantages of computer usage in secondary schools in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

1.5 Research Questions

What is the relationship between computer usage and academic achievement of secondary school students’ in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State?

What is the effectiveness of computer usage in teaching and learning process in secondary schools in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State?

What are the demerits of computer usage in secondary schools in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State?

1.6 Hypothesis

HO: There is no significant relationship between computer usage and academic achievement of secondary school students in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

HA: There is significant relationship between computer usage and academic achievement of secondary school students in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

1.7 Significance of the Study

The outcome of this study aims at providing possible solutions to problems of using computer and other ICT facilities to foster teaching and learning in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State. This study will be of significant to use of Computer by students and also it aim at finding the relationship between computer usage and academic achievement.

This study is trying to find the reason for those diversities and to determine valued recommendations for better use of computers to enhance students’ academic achievement. The computer is an effective tool; it can do good things or bad things, depending on the person who uses it.

The recommendation of this study will be useful to school administrator, students, authors and other educational bodies as well as computer teachers to provide solution to the identify factors.

1.8 Scope/Delimitations of the Study

This study will cover the level of computer usage in secondary schools in Aliero Local Government Area of Kebbi State with a view of ascertaining its influence on student’s academic achievement. It is also limited to secondary schools only in Aliero Local government, kebbi State.
