AN EXAMINATION OF THE EFFECTS OF DRUG AND RELATED SUBSTANCE ABUSE ON STUDENT STUDY HABIT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The issue of teenage drug and associated substance misuse is a global health concern that has been acknowledged by numerous organizations such as WHO, RED CROSS, and others. It is a problem that affects the entire world, including Nigeria. Herbs, leaves, and plants have been used to treat and manage ailments since the dawn of time. The use of medications does not in and of itself pose any risk, because drugs when properly given have been a boon (Falco, 1988), as stated by Sambo (2008) Adolescents’ physical and psychological development can be severely harmed by chronic drug use, which can be permanent. Depending on how medications are used, they might be useful or dangerous. A drug is a substance that, by its chemical action, can cause a change in biological activities (Okoye, 2001). It’s also thought to be a chemical that alters perceptions, cognition, emotion, behavior, and other bodily processes (Balogun, 2006). As a result, they may be thought of as chemical moderators of living tissues capable of causing physiological and behavioral changes (Nnachi, 2001). Drug misuse is a serious public health issue that affects people all over the world (UNODC, 2005). Adolescent drug use and misuse has become one of the most concerning public health issues in Nigeria and other parts of the world (NDLEAR, 1997). Several school-aged adolescents participate in a mental health program, either temporarily or permanently. Some people become nuts, become ill-adjusted to educational conditions, and finally quit out. When a medication is taken for its positive purpose, it is considered a medicine; nevertheless, the term drug should be reserved for drugs of misuse and addiction, such as alcohol, cocaine, heroine, cigarettes, and other similar substances. The Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement (especially) school boys and girls and youths between the ages of 15 and 30 years are a high-risk group, with females becoming more involved than they used to be. Ibaf (1985) classified 82.6 percent of psychiatric patients on admission as being between the ages of 11 and 35 years. So, drug abuse is defined as the use of drugs in a way that deviates from medical prescriptions or socially accepted behaviors within society, and has immediate or long-term negative consequences for the individual. Medical records show that some people have consumed too much alcohol and died as a result of it (Balogun, 2006). Many herbalists have caused irreversible damage to their patients by administering herbal medicines in excess of permitted quantities, and some people have eaten Kolanut or coffee in excess and caused damage to their Central Nervous System (CNS).

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Adolescent students are affected by drug and associated effect misuse from the moment they are admitted to higher education or secondary school. Many of these issues are caused by different homes or a lack of parental attention from either the mother or the father (Sambo, 2008). His shattered household causes a slew of issues for their children or children. The researcher is currently trying to figure out what causes teenage pupils to abuse drugs and other substances, notably in schools (Nnachi, 2001). Finally, the goal of this research is to examine into the effects of drug and associated substance usage on the study habits of students at Jigawa State’s Federal College of Education’s Biology Department.

1.3              OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The effect of this study is to determine the prevalence of drug and substance abuse among students in the Biology Department of the Federal College of Education in Miga, Jigawa State, as well as the problem that militates against the effect of drug and substance abuse on teenage students. Finally, some viable answers or recommendations to the problems and their repercussions among students should be proposed.

1.4              RESEARCH QUESTIONS

i. What motivates kids to use drugs and substances?

ii. Do students take drugs or other substances similar to them while studying or reading?

Iii. What are the consequences of drug and effect abuse?

iv. What is the degree of drug usage among students?

V. Can drugs and other substances affect a student’s study habits?

vi. What can be done to address the issues of drug and substance addiction among teenage students?

Vii. What are the effects of drug and other substance usage on students’ study habits?

Viii. What factors do the students believe are to blame for drug addiction at school?

1.5       SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The following are some of the reasons why the research is important to adolescent students:

  1. To understand the effect of drug and related substance misuse on students’ study habits.

ii. To educate students about the dangers of using drugs and similar substances that are not medically monitored or recommended by doctors.

iii. To learn about the various causes of student drug usage.

1.6        LIMITATION OF STUDY

The study was confined to Biology students at Jigawa State’s Federal College of Education’s Biology Department, which includes 100L, 200L, and 300L classes.
